Accommodation & food in Surabaya & Malang

S1. Da Rifi Hostel @ Jl Duku II /190, Pondok Candra Indah
Da Rifi is located within a
S2. WA Resto near Da Rifi
WA serves reasonably good Chinese and Indonesian food in big portions. Menu available in Chinese. Look for the pink building along the main road.
S3. Sparkling Backpacker @ Jl Kayoon
Sparkling was not sparkling at all. I wouldn't stay here if not for the unbearable noise at Da Rifi. Worn out rooms, abandoned furniture along the corridor. No key to lock room. Standard+ (Rp 57,500 pp) was so spacious it could easily hold 6 beds. Young chap at the reception has zero travel knowledge. Handy for Gubeng train station and
1 min walk to Plaza Surabaya. Spot me?
S4. A&W @ Plaza Surabaya
Fond childhood memory for Singaporeans who grew up in the 70's and 80's.
M5. Helios Hotel along Jl Pattimura
Quadrangle design with a garden and dining area in the middle. I like Helios' chalet vibe, clever layout and free wifi. Take AT from Arjosari (30 mins) to get here.
M6. Bakso Win opp Helios
Avoid. Bakso lose!
M7. Holland Bakery @ various locations
Indonesia's popular bakery chain offers a variety of breads and cakes.
M8. Roti Tugu @ Jl Tugu 3
Nicely decorated but "a first-rate bakery and cafe with sublime Dutch-style breads and pastries"? I don't think so. I can't even find a decent birthday cake here!
M9. Toko Oen @ Jl Basuki Rahmat 80
A well-preserved colonial building since 1936. We spent Rp 79,750 pp here, most expensive meal. Average food, satay was disappointing and Oen's Special taste more like sorbet than ice cream! (Felt cheated)
M10. Pizza Hut @ Jl Semuru
Birthday dinner at Pizza Hut! Note that the salad and soup bar is not free flow. We helped ourselves to at least three big servings lol lucky they didn't make us pay. Good service and great value for money (~Rp 50,000-78,000 pp)!
