Our flatmates told us there's a horse race happening at Castlepoint Beach, an hour drive from Masterton. The annual race has a long history dating back to the 1870s where farmers would compete with each other for rum and coins. Today it is a popular event for families to watch and enjoy the beach. By the time we got there, the race was nearly over. Went over to check out the lighthouse. It is an easy but unpleasant walk due to the strong wind that day; I could hardly open my eyes so we left after a short while.
