Twizel to Mt Cook via Pukaki

February 05, 2017

Early start again at 7.30am to Twizel for breakfast. Sab said her dorm mates complained about the woman last night. Stopped briefly at Pukaki for photos which wasn't as blue as the last time I saw it.

Reached Mt Cook at 11.30am, paid camp fees and set up our tent at White Horse Hill campsite while Sab went to check in at her hut.

This was the first scenic DOC campsite we stayed at, scenic indeed with the snow capped mountains in the background! I placed some rocks around the corners of our tent just in case the wind starts getting bad.

The campsite was right at the start of the Hooker Valley track which was very convenient.

Not long after we started walking we lost Sab and we carried on at our own pace. It was a very easy walk and there were many people along the track it's impossible to get lost. My legs were sore from yesterday's exertion so I was slower than usual.

Mini melting ice block

At the end of the track was a murky lake with a few random dirty looking ice bergs. It felt cooler near the lake when the wind blew. As we were heading our way back I saw Sab sitting down eating her energy bar. Took some photos with her and we went back first and waited in the car for her.

Text Arthur but he was not free to meet tomorrow. Had pizza at the Old Mountaineers Cafe. Sab ordered tomato soup which had coconut milk in it like curry. We dropped her off at her accommodation and drove back to the village to shower. There was a long queue with only two showers available. We used $4 and still had some hot water at the end lol. Managed to secure a good lot eventually after shower. The tent next to us had totally collapsed. Didn't have a good sleep due to the strong wind but I was not as worried as the last time we went through a storm in Pukenui.
